The ongoing question: If you don’t like the way your country, your state, or your city is going, how do you change it? To provide multiple answers to that question, artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman co-founded For Freedoms: The 50 State Initiative. With a belief in art as a vehicle to broaden participation and public discussion, For Freedoms has become the hub for artists and art institutions to engage in public life. In St. Louis, For Freedoms activities occur throughout the fall, including billboards, exhibitions, and artist talks at the Kranzberg Arts Center and projects+gallery. CAM hosts a For Freedoms town hall focusing on freedom of speech with guest speakers Hank Willis Thomas, For Freedoms co-founder; Rep. Bruce Franks Jr., District 78, MO House of Representatives; Nicole Hudson, Assistant Vice Chancellor for the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion at Washington University; Rachel Lippmann, criminal justice and city politics reporter at St. Louis Public Radio; and Tef Poe, musician, rapper, and activist.
