Primary Responsibilities
 
The chairperson provides academic leadership for the department and serves as a liaison between the department and other units within the university.  The general responsibilities of the department chairperson are grouped under the following major categories: Administrative, Faculty-Personnel, Liaison, Student-Related, Leadership, and Operational Functions.  The successful applicant will carry out chairperson responsibilities for a twelve-month contract.  The individual will oversee the department’s NASAD accreditation as well as accreditation with CIDA.  Teaching responsibility is equivalent to 6 hours per semester.
 
Required Qualifications
 
  • Terminal MFA degree or PhD in a field related to Art and Design (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university)
  • Successful record of university teaching and administrative experience
  • Demonstrated fiscal management skills
  • Exemplary record of leadership
  • Exemplary record of teaching and service
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly and/or creative or professional achievement
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in curricular innovation, including current and emerging trends in Art, Art Education, Art History, Commercial Multimedia and Interior Design
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of faculty morale and enthusiasm
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities

Departmental Information:  The Department of Art and Design is comprised of several units: Art and Design, Interior Design, and Commercial Multimedia. These units are located on two separate campuses (Main Campus and River Campus). Art and Design offers the BA, BFA, and BSED. Students choosing the BA option must also choose a minor outside of the Art curriculum with the exception of a minor in Fine Arts Entrepreneurship. Students choosing the BFA option may specialize in ceramics, graphic design, digital art, printmaking, painting, or sculpture. Students choosing the BSED are certified to teach K-12 at the completion of their degree and after passing the state exams. The Art Program is accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design). Interior Design offers the BS in Human Environment Studies: Interior Design, and an option for an Interior Design minor for non-majors. The Interior Design Program holds two national accreditations: one for CIDA (The Council for Interior Design Accreditation), and the other for NASAD. The Commercial Multimedia program offers the BS in either multimedia graphics or photography. All programs in the Department of Art and Design are strongly committed to providing students with experiential learning opportunities, including the Catapult Creative House, a center for entrepreneurship, located off-campus in downtown Cape Girardeau. Additionally, the department is an advocate of community-based internships, and other opportunities for student-centered learning.
