Job Description

Thompson Coburn LLP currently has a non-exempt position available in our St. Louis office for a full-time Loss Prevention Analyst to provide assistance on the client intake process and loss prevention issues.  Qualified candidates will have at least seven years of experience performing executive level administrative duties for a law firm. An Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies and/or a paralegal certificate is preferred. The person selected for this position must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
Job Responsibilities

·         Drafts engagement letters and conflict waiver letters.

·         Under the supervision of Loss Prevention Counsel, reviews and clears conflicts for new clients and/or new matters.

·         Reviews File Opening materials and submits information for required approvals.

·         Checks and clears conflicts for new staff and associate hires.

·         Assists with checking and clearing conflicts for lateral partner hires.

·         Provides guidance and assistance to legal secretaries with opening new clients, including for lateral partner hires.

·         Manages and tracks status of file transfer letters for departing attorneys.

·         Assists with file transfer requests, including analyzing request, identifying all relevant files, reviewing files as needed, coordinating transfer and obtaining confirmation of receipt.

·         Continues to maintain current knowledge and suggests revisions to and adoption of best practices in loss prevention.

·         Reviews outside counsel guidelines as submitted from clients.

·         Maintains the accuracy of the conflicts database.


Job Requirements
  • Has understanding and appreciation of basic conflicts rules governing the private practice of law.
  • Is familiar with the ethics and conflicts of interest rules of the jurisdictions in which the Firm practices.
  • Has or acquires close working knowledge of the guidelines on loss prevention provided by the Firm’s loss prevention insurance carrier.
  • Is technically proficient in the use of relevant technology of the Firm and the Loss Prevention Department.
  • Can analyze ethical and professional liability issues and problems and recommend and implement solutions.
  • Is a self-directed, self-starting individual, able to spot opportunities in advance and devise actions to optimize those opportunities.
·         Must possess a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills so as to be able to work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence. Required to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
·         Must have ability to read, write, and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
·         Must possess attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects, and strong time management skills.
·         Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
·         Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
·         Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • The physical demands of this position are representative of those that might be met by an employee in order for him or her to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.  These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the workday, having the ability to transport 20 pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
